| Everything is far cooler when you use a plastic pipette. |
Brendan had so much fun with his science kit that we were looking for some other fun experiments to do, and of course Graham wanted to participate as well.
I found a site online that detailed a cool experiment that only needed whole milk, liquid dish soap, and food coloring. Done and done!
| Rock and ro- I mean, Science! |
We used a cookie sheet instead of a plate so we could make a big mess, and we used the pipettes from Brendan's science kit to distribute the milk. This was not strictly necessary, but it was really really fun.
| I can't believe Mom is letting me do this! |
After the milk was suitably spread around, we got to add food coloring in little puddles. This was the most dangerous part, especially since Graham is notorious for insisting he do everything all by himself, but we managed to avoid catastrophe.
Once the color was added, we dripped in some dish soap. And voila!
We had some good fun with swirling it all around.
And in the end we liked it so much that we did it all over again. (But in a smaller pan this time, since milk isn't free.)
So the science behind this is, the fat cells of the milk basically run away from the dish soap, making a fun swirly pattern and just basically looking awesome. |
The boys had a great time and we all kind of learned something. How's that for a successful afternoon!
